[“Band + Poetry” Happy Hours]

Krista Muir

Krista Muir (the former Lederhosen Lucil) performs her travelling songs along with Toronto poet and friend Mónica Rosas (La Loba).

Casa del Popolo, Montréal, Québec

Free admission

In English. She intrigued us for nine years as the Tyrolean madcap Lederhosen Lucil. Then she fell in love with the baritone ukulele, composing the numbers on her albums Leave Alight and more recently Accidental Railway, about an imaginary city inspired by her travels to Greece, France and Texas. But Krista is also a lovable fixture in the always welcoming Montreal underground. “It all started when I was three and broke the ivory keys on my father’s piano with a glockenspiel mallet.” On her latest CD, she supplies recipes and scores arranged for ukulele so we can all play and sing along. Her guest is her friend and poet from Toronto, Mónica Rosas, known also as La Loba.

8:00 pm

Direction: Natasha Mytnowych

La Chapelle — scènes contemporaines, Montréal, Québec

“Few performers have the raw charisma of d’bi.young, her ability to command attention every second she’s on stage… (benu is) a riveting journey through her psyche, equal parts blood and magic.” —Serafin Lariviere, Eye Weekly

Having recently given birth and now negotiating her own mortality, benu, a 30 year old woman, contemplates life and death. Her blood pressure mysteriously rises, like a phoenix, in a Toronto hospital, triggering a series of strange physical and mental ailments that lead her down a path of fear, discovery, and renewal. Reality meets myth, magic meets ritual, and a bio-myth-o-graphical narrative unfolds in firesome ways, paralleling the mythology of the Egyptian predecessor to the phoenix, the benu bird.

d’bi.young is an Afrikan-Jamaican-Canadian visionary who has performed, published, and lectured internationally. An award-winning dubpoet, writer, and theatre practitioner, she has produced five dubpoetry albums, authored two dubpoetry collections and is the playwright/performer of the published double Dora Award-winning, one-person show blood.claat. d’bi.young recently launched the radical arts centre anitAFRIKA! dub theatre and she is presently completing her first non-fiction on dubpoetry and dubtheatre.

A La Chapelle and Festival Voix d’Amériques coprésentation. An anitAFRIKA! dub theatre production.

Casa del Popolo, Montréal, Québec

Free admission

Open mic, bilingual. A twosome reading excerpts from an experimental whodunnit they wrote in twenty-four hours, one week before the presentation… At 9:30 pm, they’ll sell the novel — edited on site — and screen a video recalling the day the two accomplices spent in a Montréal hotel, plotting their moves. Will the pair of authors pull off the event with panache? Expect the absurd with a touch of lettrism, a bit of voice theatre, shades of Burroughs, and a few surprises along the way.
